HOUSEHOLD LABOR SUPPLY AND ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT

DOI: 10.4324/9780429043079-5

One of the main factors that must be addressed in the study of strategies of household allocation of labor is the availability of labor. The potential labor supply available to a household will structure the response to labor opportunities. In this chapter I first examine how the size and structure of households are related to patterns of labor allocation. I then analyze how availability of other resources, such as land, affects labor allocation. In the analysis I will focus on market labor - which I define as those activities undertaken for wages or profit, or undertaken as part of a family business. The definition excludes maintenance activities (i.e., activities undertaken to maintain the household such as cleaning, cooking, and childcare).
